WAVE LIGHT | 24 X 24 Inch Square Seascape Resin Painting by Tiffani Buteau with Metallic Gold Abstracts

The Making of WAVE LIGHT

When I created WAVE LIGHT, I was drawing on moments in the surf where the water can look two totally different tones within just a few feet. The top of the water pulls golden sunlight in its reflection with horizontal lines rushing towards the break line where the wave dives into cold waves with webbed foam in vertical. Working in multiple layers, this painting has tremendous depth up close, much as open waters do. The final clear layer of resin I used pulls in light and lets it suspend and dance overhead, setting the gold tones aglow and deepening the richness of the dark blue. It also creates an “infinity pool” effect where the resin domes and meets the hardwood sides that are hand sanded and oiled to highlight their natural beauty,

What is Resin? Resin is commonly known as epoxy. Epoxy resin has a brilliant glass-like finish and is used for its durability in surfboards, boats, even counters, and flooring! I use similar techniques to the surfboard crafters where I mix the two parts resin, starting a 1-hour timer I must work quickly and expertly off of hundreds of hours of experience to pigment the resin, pour it, and painting with it using a knife and a blowtorch before it starts to permanently cure. Each layer needs 72 hours to fully cure and for depth, I use multiple layers.
