“Sea Swells”

This was an amazing process for me. It is one of the thickest and most complicated pieces I have ever done. There are so very many layers that intermingle in this artwork that make for an incredible depth that light can dance through. It almost as an aquarium effect on the sides because you can see through the 1/4 inch thick resin from the painting edge for a whole different experience. It’s like peering through ocean waters in all their complexity. You can actually see shadows of top layers over bottom layers! It’s a beautiful array of ocean teals, seawater blues, and seafoam greens with crisp sprawling white waves webbing across.

What is Resin?

Resin is like a liquid glass. It is a two-part epoxy that once mixed, starts to harden within the hour.

I mix resin with various pigments and then work with a blowtorch and knife to paint these scenes.

Some paintings have up to 5 layers of resin, each taking 72 hours to fully cure. You can see through the layers like looking through glass or water. Once cured, it is brilliantly shiny like glass and also robustly durable like a countertop. Resin is so durable it is even used to make surfboards using similar processes as to how I create my paintings.
