As a surfer, just a glimpse of a surfboard sets my heart aflutter. That beautiful shape brings back so many enveloping moments on the waves, both serene and exciting. That’s why I chose to work with this shape and incorporate my signature resin art style into it. The surfboard shape was hand-cut, shaped, and sanded from solid laminated Oak. This kind of wood is best for resin rivers, because carving through the layers create a texturally rich riverbed for the resin to show off. Its beautiful wood-grains are subtly enhanced with a specially blended Gunstock wood stain and lacquer. Then, riverbeds were carved into it, where I then poured a shimmering blue resin river. When the sunlight hits this, it absolutely glows! Much like the sparkle of waves on a sunny day. The resin rivers are a beautiful tropical blue with a touch of seafoam green-blue, and white waves lap up against the edges. Feel free to ask me about my process if you have any other questions.

This piece has hanging hardware on the back for installation on a wall, but it also looks fantastic standing on its own in a corner (much like a real surfboard looks eye-catching in a room corner).

What is Resin?

Resin is like a liquid glass. It is a two-part epoxy that once mixed, starts to harden within the hour.

I mix resin with various pigments and then work with a blowtorch and knife to paint these scenes.

Some paintings have up to 5 layers of resin, each taking 72 hours to fully cure. You can see through the layers like looking through glass or water. Once cured, it is brilliantly shiny like glass and also robustly durable like a countertop. Resin is so durable it is even used to make surfboards using similar processes as to how I create my paintings.
