OLALLA | 24 x 60in | HUGE Impressionist Pacific Northwest Landscape Resin Pour Painting by Tiffani Buteau

The Making of OLALLA

Inspired by hometown where my studio is in the Pacific Northwest, OLALLA is a sweepingly large landscape at 24 x 60. Its soft muted tones speak to the scenic ambiance of a rainy vantage point on the Puget Sound where rain is an enduring sight that beckons daydreams and warm tea under an overhang. Layering on this painting creates a depth field meant to capture that dreamy vantage point. OLALLA was made on a handmade birchwood panel with Poplar wood sides that have been hand sanded and oiled for a classy infinity pool-like edge where the resin meets hardwood.

What is Resin?

Resin is commonly known as epoxy. Epoxy resin has a brilliant glass-like finish and is used for its durability in surfboards, boats, even counters, and flooring! I use similar techniques to the surfboard crafters where I mix the two parts resin, starting a 1-hour timer I must work quickly and expertly off of hundreds of hours of experience to pigment the resin, pour it, and painting with it using a knife and a blowtorch before it starts to permanently cure. Each layer needs 72 hours to fully cure and for depth, I use multiple layers.
