SUNRISE POND | 12 x 36in | Impressionist Resin Pour Painting by Tiffani Buteau

The Making of SUNRISE POND

Inspired by the soft tones on Monet and the warm yellows of spring, I created this artwork with layers of resin for depth and color mingling creating the effect of sunrise colors painting the surface of a rippling pond. The top layer almost seems to float above the rest with an effervescent blue shifting translucence that disappears in most lights but shines brilliantly in direct light. Sunrise Pond was made on a handmade birchwood panel with Poplar wood sides that have been hand sanded and oiled for a classy infinity pool-like edge where the resin meets hardwood.

What is Resin?

Resin is commonly known as epoxy. Epoxy resin has a brilliant glass-like finish and is used for its durability in surfboards, boats, even counters, and flooring! I use similar techniques to the surfboard crafters where I mix the two parts resin, starting a 1-hour timer I must work quickly and expertly off of hundreds of hours of experience to pigment the resin, pour it, and painting with it using a knife and a blowtorch before it starts to permanently cure. Each layer needs 72 hours to fully cure and for depth, I use multiple layers.
